The United States of America has initiated an illegal war again Iran. So far, due to the closure of the Straits of Hormuz, this venture has had catastrophic consequences, with fuel, food (fertiliser) and medicine, blocked and the Middle East LNG energy industry either shut down or destroyed,

The USA is transporting 50,000 troops to the Gulf for a projected ground invasion of Iran, an event that could produce a bloodbath that could surpass the death toll in the Iraq war. Israel has begun an invasion of Lebanon, with savage fighting inside the country itself. All this is occurring with either apathy (most of Europe), subordination (Starmer's UK) or outright support (Germany and the EU executive).

Efforts are being made through NATO to organise a naval expedition (in reality a support force for Washington's projected invasion of Iran).

The head of NATO, Mark Rutte, six months ago, when Trump attempted another outright attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, fawned over Trump in a contemptible and craven outpouring of support which was mirrored by Irish Government publicly declared support. Official policy, six months ago, and now, was to use these opportunities to ditch military neutrality in favour of US foreign policy.

When the US / Israeli attacked commenced, Van Leyden, the President of the European Council, immediately declared support for Trumps assassination and bombing campaign and ruled out negotiations with Iran, allegedly not consulting other EU officials.

However, this may simply be political spin, as Kallas, the foreign policy head attempted, to organise support for the projected naval expedition to Hormuz.

Even so, the top EU diplomat underscored European efforts to help clear the Strait of Hormuz. Another possibility, she said, was to use a so-called coalition of the willing to secure the strait. This refers to a group of countries rather than the entire 27-member bloc.

This is a calculated reference to the 'coalition of the willing' group of countries who lined up to support George W. Bush's 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Also, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, is working with European nations to draw up a "viable" plan to secure the navigation of oil tankers, stated that opening the Strait of Hormuz is not going to be easy.

Speaking at a press conference in Downing Street, the PM said Britain will not be "drawn into the wider war."

Both Kallas and Starmer, (the latter praised by Taoiseach Michael Martin)., is attempting to organise an expedition to support the US war by the back door tactic of a 'humanitarian' mission of relief. Starmer has allowed UK bases to be used for bombing Iran 24 hours a day, yet he can officially declare he is not involved in the war when he clearly is.

The only European leader to declare outright opposition, Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez, is ostracised in Europe.

Kallas also said that EU foreign ministers would look into changing the mandate of two ongoing EU-backed naval protection missions — Operations Aspides and Atalanta — so that they could help to open the Strait of Hormuz.

These operations, — originally conceived to protect EU commercial vessels from attacks by Houthi 'rebels' in Yemen — are not operating in the strait and are bound by rules of engagement that would limit their effectiveness, a senior EU diplomat said.

On 9 March 2026, French president Emmanuel Macron announced that France is sending additional ships to the region to set up an escort mission for the Strait of Hormuz with other states, due to the crisis, in the framework of EUNAVFOR Operation Aspides.

Macron is rhetorically opposed to the US war, but could simply join any EU led mission, which of course would be effectively run by the United States, which has been demanding such support from the beginning of its war with Iran. This would of course be yet another way of distancing France away from President Jacques René Chirac's opposition to the 2003 Iraq war.

In short, the EU's immediate response to the US war on Iran, indicates EU official engagement and facilitation of, US demands., despite the obvious damage to European economic interests. This is accompanied by rather meaningless, and deceptive, rhetorical opposition.

Meanwhile, the closest foreign ally the EU possesses (apart from the US), is openly discussing using atomic weapons on Iran.
