Remembering the Irish civil war 100 years later and why it still matters
This video shows the National Graves Association ceremony marking the centenary of the attack on the Four Courts by the pro-treaty faction which started the Irish civil war on 28 June 1922. The text at beginning of the video is from a pamphlet by Frank Gallagher, 'By What Authority' (Irish Nation Commitee, 1923), available at: https://digitalcollections.tcd.ie/concern/works/qz20sv018?locale=en and it quotes British cabinet ministers indicating, in so many words, that they would issue an utimatum to the pro-treaty political faction to should start hostilities or face military sanctions. This is the reality of the start of the civil war which many historians still portray as a victory for "democracy".
