St Patrick, 1798 and the Kings of Leinster
Old Kilcullen Graveyard contains an extraordinary concentration of Irish history. It is the site of a monastery said to have been established by St Patrick and still has the remains of two Celtic high crosses (high crosses are found in Celtic countries and date from the 9th to the 12th centuries). In addition, it has the base of a round tower (possibly dating from the 11th century) and is close to Dún Ailinne, one of Ireland's royal sites and seat of the kings of Leinster. The round tower was extensively damaged by a battle on 24 May 1798, one of the first engagements of the 1798 Rebellion.
