Last year, the National Bus and Rail Union (NBRU) has called for the multi-billion euro MetroLink and BusConnects plans to be scrapped and replaced with cheaper alternatives due to COVID-19.

The impression has been created that the present Government has embarked on large-scale public transport projects. In fact, most of these are draft proposals.

On 1st November 2005, the Government released a ten-year transport plan. Titled "Transport 21", it outlined a €34.4 billion spend on road, rail and light rail projects across the country.

On its website devoted to the M3 motorway, the NRA goes to some lengths to justify the road's construction.
